Today at Snarøen
Three questions the club asks every morning. Answered by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and the Norwegian Mapping Authority.
Consulting the heavens.
Sailing Weather
Live from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Because a true Snarøen checks the wind before the champagne.
Forecast data: MET Norway (yr.no), updated on every visit. Advisory banter only. Real seamanship is not provided by this website.
Departure Planner
Pick the boat, the route and how much heel you will tolerate. We scan the next 48 hours of wind and tell you when to cast off.
Currents, honestly: there is no reliable free live current data for the Oslofjord, so the tide stream here is an approximation from tide phase, not measured streams. A rising tide is assumed to push water into the fjord (toward Oslo), a falling tide out of it, along the fjord axis, scaled by how fast the water level is changing and capped at the maximum you set (0.3 kn by default; set it to 0 to turn it off). Wind-driven currents and local streams in narrow sounds may be stronger and are not modelled. Routes follow straight legs between the listed spots. Boat figures are typical approximations by type and size; speed and heel are simple estimates. Banter with arithmetic, not navigation. Check the chart, the forecast and your own judgment.
Oslofjord Currents
An animated look at where the water is going, from MET Norway's ocean model. Tap anywhere for current, wind, waves and sea temperature.
Read this first: the animated field is MET's published Oslofjord GRIB. It is a coarse grid (see resolution above), so the inner fjord has only a handful of cells and narrow parts are blank. Arrows and particles show where the model has water; animation speed is exaggerated and is not real drift. Current direction always means where the water is moving toward. Wind and wave directions are where they come from. Tap values come from MET's point forecasts and can differ from the field. Not for navigation. Contains data from MET Norway (CC BY 4.0) and Kartverket.
Must Do's
Non-negotiable, if you wish to be taken seriously at the club.
Sail to Færder
Out the Oslofjord to the lighthouse, as a true Snarøen must. Then celebrate in the harbour exactly as hard as you sailed. Harder.
Le Rêve, Mexico
Worth a stop for a chillaxing time: a cold beer in a hammock on the beach. The rooms are not too shabby either.
Host like you mean it
A good host keeps a smile on the faces of their many friends. Start by finding the drink that says who you are.
Find Your Cocktail
Four questions. One real drink, with its recipe, and a provenance to bore your friends with.
The Test
Five questions. No wrong answers, only revealing ones.
Soundtrack
The chill sounds of Monte Carlo.
